Can anybody tell me ...which tehnology to use for developing web based chat(in java) application?

Whether to use:
Applet/Servlet
Applet with sockets
RMI
Jsp/servlets

Please,suggest me the right way to do develop chat application!! ( as I m new to sockets,rmi )
