As the previous msg says: "Depends what you mean by extending." My company is heavily involved in a standard called XBRL which (XBRL.ORG) is a markup language that provides such extensibility on "XML" and "Schema" level.


You might want to take a look at that.

Depends on what you think about extending.
XML does not provide extending in OO-manner - no overriding, no polymorphism. But you can "extend" a file with additional information by inclusion, more exactly entity inclusion, see XML-Spec "Character and Entity References"
. A little example is in Ant´s FAQ "How do I include an XML snippet in my build file?".
