log4j, how do operations to log file

Hi, i am using log4j with tomcat ,
if i try to rename the log file with another process, it cannot be done since the file is being "used" by tomcat,(i fact if you try to delete the file with windows(del key) you get the error "file is being used...etc" so, is there a way of renaming file without closing tomcat, i mean, a way of telling log4j to release a while the file, so in that moment operations can be done to file?

thank you very much!

Is just coping the file not enough?
Otherwise you could configure log4j to create a new log file on a time or size bases.
