What is the purpose of Ant?

can't i build a web application with out using Ant?

When it can be useful to me?

Maybe a look on Ant´s website (especially "Apache Ant" section) and the FAQ would help.

Ant is a build tool (amongst other things)

Yes!!

When you are building or distributing projects (amongst other things)!!
