can lucene index SGML documents?

we are looking at using lucene for a search application however the documents that we are looking to index are all SGML format, is there an parser avalaibe that will create an index from these documents?

Nothing pre-built that I know of. You will have to do a bit of custom programming, but there are articles that describe how to index/search XML with Lucene, so this should be easy.
