What is the difference between having the data type of a property being another class versus having an association between the two classes?



For example, say we have a customer account class with a customer property. We also have a customer class with various properties describing the customer. Why not make the data type of the customer property in the customer account class be of type customer, so an instance of the account has an instance of the customer in it? Why would it be better to draw a 1-1 or *-1 relationship? I see no difference.

There is no difference besides that it looks differently. You can choose whatever approach better suits your current communication needs. Show those relationships as associations which are currently important to you; show the others as attributes or even omit them.
