I have written a program that needs to be connected to a database. I have created an executable jar file and a desktop shortcut of it. What i want to do is that the user will just double-click on the shortcut and use the program. Because it needs to be connected to a database, I have created a batch file to start the database server. My problem is that the user still needs to open a command line to run the batch file. Can anyone help me how to run a batch file without opening a command line so that a double click on the shorcut will automatically start the program as well as the database server.

As a friend of Ant I can promote that :-)

An ant buildfile can start programs, java applications, ... and can invoked by other java apps

But very much easier is to provide a shortcut to your server-start batchfile and let the user start the server. The application will give the right error message if the server is not available.
