Well, basically your thoughts are quite correct, except for point 3.
Tomcat indeeed receives the "package" from Apache through port 8009, but the result is sent back to apache that takes care of sending the response back to the browser.
When you use Tomcat behind Apache, through port 8009 (or whatever has been configured), you can completely disable Tomcat's HTTP Connectors on port 8080.
This because the HTTP connections are not handled by Tomcat but by Apache.
