Is it good practice to start a remote JVM over LAN instead of installing it locally?

On Windows PCs where no JVM (of a desired version) is installed I sometimes connect via network to a remote computer that has a JDK or JRE and invoke the java.exe there to start Java applications.

I have used this for testing purposes and it always worked fine. But is it save and acceptable to invoke a productive application this way, with no JVM actually installed? (It would ease software distribution.)
