How can I use Lucene on a stand-alone laptop running Win2000 or WinXp/Sp1 for indexing/searching a large collection of SVG/XML documents supplied on CD-ROM without installing a Web server on my computer? Have you got (or where can I find)an example of a java applet or documents describing how to use Lucene in this context ?

Many thanks in advance

It sounds like you need to do some more basic Lucene reading.
Lucene does not have anything to do with a web server. You do not need a web server to use Lucene.
Lucene is a Java library for indexing and searching.
I suggest you look at Lucene's Resources page for some articles that will make things clear for you.
