It is possible to use a JavaScript in order to display a child window in a borwser.
I would like to know where I can find documentation about
the general management of child windows on the web.

The child windows are displayed in order they are opened. Probably you can order tham by setting the focus on them explicitly in the order required after opening. This faq gives you the optional features available for window.open (click here)
