Hello all i would like to implement a Java-based Network Monitoring Tool, one of the things i would like to use is SNMP. Now i found the Java JMX Framework. I've done some reading on it, but i'm not sure if a really understand the idea of it. Does the JMX already support for SNMP or would i have to implement it myself? Or is there already a free existing SNMP implementation? I find it difficult to found concrete examples of what JMX is used for. Pointers to application which use JMX and (SNMP) are appreciated. I also found the "AdventNet SNMP API Package" in the net. Does somebody know that? Any help appreciated    More>>

Angela,
Adventnet is only one option open to your disposal, and indid it is a good one.
But Adventnet is not your only option, you can also use Sun JDMK who comes with several Adaptors (including SNMP - it also includes the MIB - generator etc). You also have Koshna... but when I checked it out it was a few steps behind JDMK and Adventnet.
Adventnet had greater GUI, and much more easy to develop JMX programs with.
BUT!!!
Adventnet consume a much greate memory then JDMK... which can be a problem...

Hope I've been of some Help...

Guy.

Dear Angela,

To build SNMP Agents for your application you can go for either AdventNet
AgentToolKit Java/JMX Edition or AdventNet ManageEngine JMX Studio products.

AdventNet SNMP API Package is used to build SNMP Managers for your SNMP agents.

About AdventNet Agent ToolKit Java/JMX Edition :

This Toolkit is an intuitive GUI Tool for building SNMP Agents from MIBs.
Users need to instrument the generated stub files to

monitor the applications. Thus you can generate JMX based SNMP Agents, there
is no need to do any SNMP implementation by yourself.  User can generate
JMX based SNMP V1 or V2C or V3 agents for the applications.

Go through the following link to know the supported features in AdventNet
Agent ToolKit Java/JMX Edition:

About AdventNet ManageEngine JMX Studio:

AdventNet ManageEngine JMX Studio is an advanced version of AdventNet Agent
ToolKit Java/JMX Edition. This is also an intuitive GUI tool to generate
JMX based SNMP agents for your applications. You can generate SNMP Agents
for J2SE or J2EE applications.

There is no need to have MIBs for your application, by just loading your
application you can generate JMX based SNMP agents.

This tool will generate MIBs automatically for your loaded application. The
generated MBeans are auto-intrumented. Very

minimal coding might be required.
