I utilize Tomcat 3.3 to develop my web applications.

The netscape browser (different versions)doesn't open excel application when I click on the excel files links in the pages of my application.

I tried to configure mime type in the browser and in the web.xml of Tomcat, but without results.

In the tomcatwebapps
ootweb-infweb.xml (I tried in all web.xml files!), I inserted the following lines:

xls
application/excel

Can You help me?

Best regards

Search the FAQ's. The correct mime type registered by Microsoft for XLS files is "application/vnd.ms-excel", for Tomcat's web.xml. Also you have to have Netscape configured correctly on the client side.

What happens if, inside Netscape, you browse locally on the local PC filesystem, to an Excel file, and try to open it? Does that work (presumably firing up an external Excel window?)? I think you should get that working on the client side first, and then try downloading from the server side again.
