JAXB, should one start using the API in a live project considering the fact that it is still in its beta? This will help me avoid a lot of unnecessary code.

JAXB is no longer a beta product. The latest version can be downloaded from Sun packed within the Java Web Services
Developer Pack 1.1.
If it is a package from Sun you can always trust the fact that the API of the early access version will be the very much the same as the API of the official release. A lot of open source packages to not maintain that principle but there are exceptions: Struts, Tomcat, ect.
