Newbie: Just installed Tomcat, yet after starting Tomcat I get just a 500 server error, "Bad URL"

I'm quite new at this. I am trying to run Tomcat to learn Java for doing Web pages. Tomcat seems to be running fine on my Windows 98 system--no error messages when I start Tomcat--but when I enter "http://localhost:8080/" I get a 500 error code. (Same with "http://127.0.0.1:8080/") One of the reasons I am trying Tomcat is that I couldn't get Microsofts Personal Web Server working on my computer either (same error message), so I figured Tomcat might be friendlier. Could it have anything to do with the kind of Internet connection/configuration I have? I have cable Internet and use Internet Connection Sharing. Are there troubleshooting or diagnostic procedures you can suggest to isolate where the problem is?    More>>

You should have a look to the log files. Could you post the error message from catalina.out or similar.


I don´t think this problem is related with the Internet connection. At least the web server could answer something (500 error)


I guess it´s related with some tomcat configuration issue


I little more information please. Which Tomcat are you usign?
