I am planning to a map application using J2ME but I am new to language itself . I don't know whether J2ME can support bitmap or not and how large the graphic file can be supported . If anyone has any experince in this kinda application or information that would be a life saver .

Hi

J2ME supports PNG format, but dimension and number of colors of displayed picture depend on the device that is running your app.

Size of the picture is also limited by device memory and maximum MIDlet size (Nokia 6310i - 30 KB for MIDlet, 3510i - about 60KB, for other check device spec :) ).

So you have two options:

1. Develop one app with many images inside, and you will inside your code decide which images to display (In your code, you can always check screen resolution and color depth)

2. Or make some number of apps for the most popular device types (e.g. with images with 2 / 16 / 4096 colors, with different dimensions). And when user is downloading your app using OTA, you decide (depending on HTTP header) which app is send back to him

Well, I hope, this helps :)
