How do I abort the exectuion of a query/update or delete based on the time taken for the execution of the respective operation?

In a plsql procedure, we would like to "stop / terminate / cancel" the exectuion of a query / update or delete based on the time taken for the execution of the respective operation. In other words, when we find that a particular select / update or delete is taking more than 5 seconds we want the execution to be aborted. Also, if the sum total of the processing time exceeds 5 seconds, we want to abort it.

Start a transaction, put an execution timeout of 5 seconds, and if it sucessfull, commit the transaction.

This is the stuff I would do in ADO + T-SQL. Probably it will work under PL/SQL too.

Probably the transaction stuff is optional
