Memory problems running application continuously

I use Lucene in a servlet that run continuously both indexing and searching. It keeps searchers open, so probably a lot of caching occurs. Could it be the reason of memory overflows? Does this caching has concept of 'expiration' or does it store intermediate results of past searches indefinitely?

Lucene doesn't do any caching of results. The memory leak is most likely in your application. I suggest you run your application under a profiler in order to find what's leaking.
