I am encountering an unique problem while connecting to Tomcat. Internet Explorer is redirecting me to the following web page http://www.att.net/cgi-bin/websearch?cmd=qry&qry=localhost:8080, while I try to open
http://localhost:8080/. I am running Tomcat 4.1.12 on Windows XP and AT&T is my ISP. What may be the problem?

From your description, it seems that the server isn't started.

Explorer, in fact, is not finding the server that is looking for (on port 8080), and then is redirecting you to the search page that has been defined internally.

Can you double check that and, eventually, post the errors that prevent Tomcat from starting?

Maybe, you can take a look at this FAQ (Problem when shutting Tomcat down.
On a Windows 95/98/ME, I start Tomcat. A window appears and disappear right away, and when I access to the server, it doesn't show me the index page. When I shotdown Tomcat, I get a java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused.
) to have some hints on how to try to figure out what is going on.
