ANTLR implemented with heterogenous AST ?

It seems to me that ANTLR uses heterogenous AST representation for the grammars, is that right ?


In the documentation I understood (and also could experience myself) that homogenous ANTLR-child-sibling-ASTs are much more convenient. If so, why does ANTLR use the heterogenous way ? It would seem to me, that the internal processing up to the code generation (which are, I guess, no more than tree walkers) could be done really much more elegant by using the ANTLR tree parser features. Am I wrong ?
