Say I have an applet embedded in a html page. And the applet is now on a minimized browser window. How can I popup a message on the client screen when an event happens at the server end? Possible? If so how?

Well, the question is what kind of server is running behind and how does the applet catch the server event.. then you simply create an applet window or a javascript window using LiveConnect (keywords: netscape.javascript, JSObject uses the JAWS.JAR file which you must copy to the javaSDK1.X.X/lib/ext/ folder to compile code)

Also if you want to communicate beetween the server side (like a PHP server) and an applet you can also go through variables passed to javascript with LiveConnect.

k hope this kinda helps.

Cheers!
