How does the Log4j works in clustering environment of a J2EE base application?

How does it address the issues related to logging of the application on two or more application servers?

Is the generated log usable for debugging as it might scatter across logs of those application servers?

How does it track the logging at central place in a clustering environment?

You have two obvious options; there may be more:

  • Use the SyslogAppender and log everything to a central machine using syslog
  • Use a JDBC appender to log everything to a database

This will solve your 'central place' problem in a clustered environment. However, this raises issues of logging over the network, or, in the case of the JDBC appender, hitting your database a lot.

Hope that helps,
