Does anyone have any idea when Java 1.4 will be ready for Mac OSX? Is it likely to be a matter of weeks, months, or years?

You can get a beta right now as a registered developer (it's free to register). Just go to http://connect.apple.com/ and sign up and download:

Java 1.4.1 Developer Preview 2

This is a pre-release implementation of JDK 1.4.1 that runs on Mac OS X 10.2 or later. The VM is an implementation of Hotspot 1.4.1, and the UI implementation uses the Mac OS X Cocoa APIs.
