Can I run an RMI application that makes use of callbacks across firewalls?

Govind Seshadri

No, you cannot use RMI applications that make use of callbacks across firewalls. The RMI transport layer makes use of HTTP tunneling to get through firewalls. Since HTTP is a stateless protocol, it does not offer a suitable transport layer for the callback mechanism.
