I have a JSP which does some intensive I/O and consequently takes approximately 20 seconds or so to load.

You can add the following code into <head> section:
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
<!-- Original: www.sharatbabu.com -->
<!-- Begin --> function loadImages() {
if (document.getElementById) { // DOM3 = IE5, NS6
document.getElementById ('hidepage').style.visibility = 'hidden'; }
else {
if (document.layers) { // Netscape 4
document.hidepage.visibility = 'hidden'; }
else { // IE 4 document.all.hidepage.style.visibility = 'hidden';
}
}
}
</script>

Call loadImages() function on Body Onload()
Add the following lines into <BODY> section.
<div id="hidepage" style="position: absolute; left:300px; top:250px; background-color: #FFFFCC; layer-background-color: #FFFFCC; height: 10%; width: 30%;">
<table width=100%><tr><td><img src = "/image/process.gif"></td><td valign=middle align=middle>Page loading ... Please wait...</td></tr></table></div>
