What multicast groups does Jini use?

Tim Rohaly

Permanent multicast addresses are assigned by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, or IANA. Jini uses two well-known multicast groups as part of discovery, one for each of the two multicast protocols used in discovery:

  • The announcement protocol is used to advertise a new lookup service on the network. Announcement uses the jini-announcement multicast IP address 224.0.1.84 at port 4160.
  • The request protocol is used to find existing lookup services on the network. Request uses the jini-request multicast IP address 224.0.1.85, also at port 4160.
