How can I update the registry on the client machine from an applet?
John Zukowski Since the registry is a Microsoft Windows-specific capability, there is no support for this in standard Java. And, an untrusted applet would have no such access. If you trust the applet and you want to limit the program to Windows, you can use Microsoft's J/Direct to access the registry. Products like JExpress from DeNova (http://www.denova.com/JExpress/Manual/Custom/registry.html) offer support for accessing the registry from Java. However, they are primarily meant for install-type scripts, where trust is less of an issue. Another option from Java, again limiting yourself to Microsoft's VM, is to use their client-store area, which lets you save information between runs, up to 1 MB by default. However, you need to be trusted for that too.
