What is PGP?

John Mitchell

PGP stands for Pretty Good Privacy which originally denoted a program written by Phil Zimmerman which made it possible for normal folks to securely encrypt and exchange messages/files. The full story is fairly long and complicated (involving cypherpunks, government harassment and lawsuits, etc.) but eventually Phil sold PGP to Network Associates (which still owns it today). OpenPGP is now the standard definition.
