What is Java Web Start?

Unveiled at JavaOne 2000, Java Web Start is a method for deploying Java applications through a web browser. It checks on the availability of the appropriate Java runtime environment and will cache the application locally for offline running. It also includes built in version monitoring, for automatic downloading of new application versions.
