If there is a method in an Entity EJB that does not modify the bean's data (read only), can I specify that load() and store() methods should not be called before and after the call to this method?

The EJB 1.1 specification does not define any such business method contracts that you can use as read-only methods (methods which do not call ejbLoad() and ejbStore()).

Application servers like WebSphere provide you with an ability to specify beans as read-only. When flagged as read-only in the bean deployment descriptor, WebSphere optmizes the database access and the use of transaction control mechanisms.
